VCPR

Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship

What is a VCPR?

A Veterinary-Client-Patient relationship is established when a veterinarian examines an animal patient for a client. This is required by law for us to administer, dispense or write a script for a prescription drug for an animal. A VCPR is not required for an over-the-counter medication.

Does the vet have to see my animal EVERY time medication is prescribed?

This depends upon the medication. For prescription flea and tick or heartworm prevention, for example, we require that we have examined the animal within the last year. The same is true for a Veterinary Feed Directive for livestock. For other medications, the prescription will include how many refills are allowed before the animal needs to be rechecked by the veterinarian.
